If you have been around here a while, you know my favorite way to make mimosas is without the juice.  In fact, I will often be the one ordering the bottomless mimosa, minus the juice.

But when I am actually going to make a traditional mimosa, I always think about my most favorite Alaska Air lounge bartender in the world who always asks the question every time a mimosa is ordered,

“For flavor or for color?”

Celebrating National Mimosa Day

You know we love to celebrate just about any occasion, but mimosa day is the perfect occasion for someone who absolutely loves bubbly.  Even if May 16th is the unofficial holiday, we say, chill your bubbly, grab some fruit and let’s celebrate.

Last year we celebrated National Mimosa Day with an amazing Mimosa Bar which, of course, is a whole lot of fun and great if you’re entertaining.  But if you want something more simple, we have the perfect mimosa day celebration for you.

Cheater Mimosas

Yes, we know, a traditional mimosa is 1/2 juice and 1/2 bubbly and we talk all about the history of the mimosa here. And since we love our mimosas with as little actual juice as possible, we’re going to celebrate in a little bit different way this year.

Let’s celebrate National Mimosa Day, by making cheater mimosas a couple different ways.

Frozen Fruit Mimosas

We absolutely love using frozen fruit in all our bubbly cocktail and mocktail drinks. In fact, you rarely see us use fresh fruit and here’s why:

  1. Frozen fruit serves as an ice cube and keeps your drink chilled
  2. Frozen fruit can be bought in advance making it one less trip to make to the store right before you’re ready to host your get together.
  3. Frozen fruit is always in season.
The perfect way to make a mimosa without the juice!

The most simple way to make a frozen fruit cheater mimosa is to take your favorite fruit, put it into the bottom of your champagne glass and pour bubbly on top.  And truly, the frozen fruit selection is endless:

  • Strawberries
  • Raspberries
  • Peaches
  • Cranberries
  • Blackberries
  • Blueberries
  • Pineapple
  • Mango
  • Watermelon
  • Dragonfruit (strain this first and add some simple syrup)

Take your Mimosa to the Next Level

Here’s the thing, you can always buy fresh, in season fruit and freeze it, taking out portions as needed for your mimosa. In fact, here’s one of our most favorite things to do with fruit:

  1. Take an ice cube tray and place one piece of fruit (or as many as it takes to fill) into each section.
  2. If you have an open bottle of bubbly, cover the fruit with bubbly.  If you don’t have an open bottle of bubbly, take your favorite liquor and cover each piece with that liquor.
  3. Place into the freezer overnight (at a minimum).

Here’s the thing, these will not be frozen solid like an ice cube, the fruit will be, but because liquor doesn’t freeze, it will be a little slushy like.  But we love using these “ice cubes” to make cheater mimosas.

Northwest Berry Vodka Mimosas

By far, the simplest way to make a super tasty mimosa is to grab a bottle of Crater Lake Northwest Berry Vodka and sparkling rosé.

Cheater mimosa recipe
  • 1-1.5 oz Northwest Berry Vodka
  • Top with Bubbly
  • Frozen fruit (optional)
  1. Chill your vodka or add your vodka to a cocktail shaker with ice to chill.
  2. Strain into your favorite champagne glass.
  3. Top with sparkling rosé.

Yes, we tried this same bubbly cocktail with brut, and it was good, but we liked the rosé better.

To make this Northwest Berry Mimosa with an addition of frozen fruit (which by the way, if you’re located in the Northwest, you’re lucky because this will be easy) you have two options:

  1. Simply add frozen northwest berries into your glass.
  2. Muddle northwest berries with the vodka, strain into your glass.

Now if you’re not lucky enough to live in the Northwest and have access to huckleberries or marionberries, you can use any type of berry like raspberries, blueberries or strawberries.
