I do believe I made the perfect fall/winter drink and lambrusco sangria recipe for the holiday season. These will certainly be on repeat at my house during this time of year.
Trust me, go to the store and grab a bottle of lambrusco wine (or two) and you’ll be creating the perfect wine cocktails at your next celebration.
Lambrusco Wine
Lambrusco is an Italian sparkling red wine from the northern region. While it is typically a sweet red wine, like most wines, you can find these in various sweetness levels.
There are four high quality varieties to be on the lookout for when you’re shopping for your next bottle of wine. One of which is Lambrusco Grasparossa. And for both of these lambrusco cocktails, this is the variety we used.
This grape makes the boldest lambrusco wines with great flavors of red and purple fruits and the creaminess is so dang good. Because of it’s bold flavors, it was able to truly complement the strong flavors like ginger and cinnamon that we added to each of the cocktail recipes
Lambrusco wine is made in the same method as prosecco, the Charmat method, also referred to as the tank method. This is the simplest way to make a sparkling wine. It starts out like all other sparkling wines with a still base wine. That base wine is put into a large tank with a mixture of yeast and sugar. This second fermentation (the bubbly magic) takes place directly in this tank and then is bottled for your consumption.
We’ve paired lambrusco wines with Italian sausage, pizza, burgers, and, of course charcuterie.
And I have been wanting to make lambrusco cocktails for some time now and I’m so happy I started with these two.
Lambrusco Cocktails
You know I was on a spritz recipe kick all summer long (I’ll link a few here for you), and I will definitely get around to recreating a lambrusco spritz, Until then, enjoy thse perfect recipes for the fall and winter.
Lambrusco Ginger Sparkler
This drink was quite refreshing and not overpowering with ginger. It will make the perfect Christmas cocktail with the red and green.
- 3 oz Lambrusco
- 11/2-2 oz Ginger beer (we used ginger beer ice cubes)
- 1/2 oz Lime juice
- 1/2 oz Ginger Simple syrup
- Garnish with a lime wheel and candied ginger
- Since we used ginger beer ice cubes, we added about 8 ice cubes to the champagne glass. If you’re not using ginger beer ice cubes, simply add the ginger beer to the glass with some regular ice cubes.
- Add lime juice and simple syrup.
- Add Lambrusco and stir gently.
As the ginger beer ice cubes melt, the drink develops different flavors. It’s one reason we love using fun ice cubes in our drinks. Not to mention, the drink does not get watered down.
TIP: If you have a ginger liqueur, this would be perfect in this drink. I would add 1 oz and leave out the simple syrup.
Spiced Labrusco Sangria
This is the best fall in a glass cocktail I’ve created to date. So easy, so delicious and it’ll warm you right up.
- 1 Apple diced
- 2 Cinnamon sticks
- 1 cup Apple cider
- 1/2 c Spiced rum
- 2 oz Cinnamon syrup or Apple Cinnamon Syrup
- Garnish with apple slices and a cinnamon stick
The best part of this lambrusco sangria is just like every other sangria, you just pour everything into a pitcher and let is sit for a couple hours.
Now, in my typical sangria recipes, I say that you can let it sit from 2-24 hours and then top with bubbly before serving. But since lambrusco is a sparkling Italian red wine, I made it about 2 hours before serving and let it sit in the refrigerator. You can cover it with foil or plastic wrap if you want to, but I didn’t think it was necessary.
